BAROLO LA SERRA, DISCOVER ONE OF THE BEST CRU OF LA MORRA
Do you know the Barolo wines of Marcarini? Have you ever tasted them? If not, please read this post. You will discover “a story to enjoy”. This time it’s the turn of our Barolo La Serra, a great cru of La Morra. We are sure you will learn something new!
Every wine is a small collective masterpiece. Nature, people, tradition. Experience, history, technology. It is the balance between all of these that makes a wine unique and profound. Capable, that is, of continung to tell its story from whatever viewpoint it is analysed: geology and soil (to learn more about this aspect, please read our post about the terrains of LA MORRA), viticulture, climatology, oenology and folklore (yes, a wine is also the sum of a community’s customs and traditions).
This post is the second of a series aiming to provide details of peculiarities, secrets and tales linked to our wines (read our first post on BAROLO BRUNATE). It is always good to learn more: every wine comes alive when it is shared, when we tell its story as we pour it into our glasses.
BAROLO LA SERRA, PERFUME OF THE SOIL
La Serra holds a very important role amongst the ‘Additional Geographic Definitions’ of La Morra. It is a vineyard with unique characteristics, which are strongly expressed in the wines produced here.
VINEYARD UP THE HILL!
La Serra is a strip of land in the shape of a boomerang, which you encounter when you leave La Morra heading south. It is a splendid vineyard, in one of the highest points of the municipality, at an altitude of between 370 to 450 metres. La Serra is also one of the ‘Additional Geographic Definitions’ of Barolo, in recognition of its history, prestige and typical character.
PETALOSO
The highest point of La Serra forms a gentle slope. Every now and then there are strong winds, which provide constant ventilation for the vines. This evens out the temperatures: not too hot during the day, not too cold at night. The micro-climate of La Serra has an influence on the tannin, softening it, and emphasising the fruity, flowery notes. The many tastings conducted of this wine reveal distinct scents of rose petals and violets: a Barolo style that is fresh and crisp, perfectly recognisable.
IT’S NEBBIOLO, BABY!
Our Barolo La Serra is produced in exactly the same way as our Brunate. The differences of aroma and character are the exclusive fruit of the ‘Additional Geographic Definitions’, a combination of the altitude, soil, and micro-climate. This is the true magic of wine and this is the extraordinary flexibility of the Nebbiolo vine, capable of differentiating itself and expressing itself in diverse ways in vineyards that are only a few hundred metres apart!
